Below are the results of observation to the android robot on the evaluation of gaze behavior and answers the questionnaire.
Uncanny valley
Many subjects mentioned that artificially of the android’s behavior, appearance and imbalance between behavior and appearance on the questionnaire. The artificiality of eye motion in particular may cause an increase the fixations number on the android’s eyes. The high of frequency of fixation could represent the uncanny valley. It is necessary to ascertain whether subjects provide fewer fixations on a robot that has robotic appearance to examine this prediction, such as ASIMO. The hypothesis that the frequency of fixations is represents the evaluation of communication, and the evaluation varies inversely with the frequency.
Eye contact
Some subjects mentioned that they could not make eye contact to the android robot. It is considered that the eye contact lack causes the uncanniness. Some psychological researchers show that eye contact can serve a function variety in human to human communication. It is estimated that eye contact and android’s appearance work synergistically to enhance communication. It will compare with a robot that has a robotic appearance and no eye contact behavior to ascertain this.
Contingent motion
One subject answered that the android with motion was uncanny than the still android because the motion was not contingent. Another subject mentioned that repeating same behavior was unnatural. It is possible that the lack contingent motion of android made no difference between the android with motion and the still android in the result. It is described as a contingent motion of non-human object varies an infant’s attitude. It is estimated that the android’s contingent motion provides an effect that work in synergy with its like human appearance.
Involuntary waving motion
One subject mentioned that it was uncanny that the still android was no moving only the head though human interlocutor, the android with motion was always moving the whole body slightly. It showed that the slight involuntary waving motion of a humanoid robot makes its behavior more natural.
